Science Project Prep Workshop
Science projects propel students into a world of discovery and scientific research that goes beyond the classroom and textbooks. A first-hand appreciation of what practicing scientists actually do is gained by allowing students to experiment, make decisions, form hypotheses, test, seek solutions and make presentations. Science projects allow students to explore new ideas and learn about the principles of the scientific method. Preparing for a science fair helps to develop valuable communication skills and self-confidence. Working on a science project takes students on a thrilling journey of new ideas and self-discovery.
Science Project Prep is a five session workshop designed to guide students, teachers and parents to a better understanding of what makes a great science fair project. Sessions are divided into two groups: elementary (3rd 5th grade) and secondary (6th 12th grade). Our knowledgeable Science Center faculty will guide students through the science fair project process from the “Getting Started” checklist through a valuable in-class practice presentation session before the fair. Special emphasis will be placed on learning the scientific method and demystifying science fair terminology. Each 90-minute session will focus on topics that will inspire and coach students to the completion of a meaningful project.
The workshop is divided into 5 sessions held between September and December. The weeks in between will give ample time for students to do their research and prepare for the next session. This time frame also allows secondary students, selected to advance to the district competition, time to organize their paperwork and make final modifications to their projects.
The Science Center of Pinellas is recognized as a science fair center by Pinellas County Schools. This allows students who attend schools that do not have a science fair or students who are home schooled to advance to district and state competitions. Students must participate in a school-level fair (or a science fair center) to be considered for these competitions. The Science Center fair will be held in mid January. Both elementary and secondary students will present their projects at the fair. Judges will be invited to participate from area schools and universities.
The workshop fee is $75 for 1 student and 1 parent/teacher.
Materials needed for first session:
• Notebook for diary entries
So that students, parents and teachers can maximize their workshop experience, childcare for younger siblings will be provided. The cost is $6 per session per child for children 3 years and older. At this time we do not have facilities for infant care.
